GRANDVILLE – Putnam County
FFA students won first place in the team soil judging
competition at the Farm Progress Show.
In the individual
competition, Matt Holmbeck of Hennepin won second place.
The team and Holmbeck
competed against other teams and individuals from throughout
Illinois and Indiana, judging soil samples taken from the
Decatur site. The competition was held during the Farm
Progress Show in August.
The samples included both
prairie and timber soils.
Students were selected based
on their ability to properly identify and name the make-up
of the soil samples.
Evaluating soil samples
allows people to know the best uses and care for the soil.
Samples are also used by farmers to determine what kind of
crops will grow best on the land.
The first place team was
awarded $400, and Holmback won $150 for his second place
finish.
The contest is sponsored, in
part, by 1st Farm Credit Services.
